TO REQUEST A PHOTO OF GRAVE

The index on my website is  of names on memorial inscriptions in Anfield Cemetery. If you would like a photograph of any memorial, please make a donation of your choice,  towards the upkeep of the website and I will send all photo's taken of the memorial. Donations can be made by overseas donations via paypal to my email address. Please ask for methods of donation for UK in £ sterling- either by cheque p.o. or credit to a Halifax account.

From a memorial inscription photograph you can get the date of death, with which, you can visit your local library and look in the binders which hold the burial record details. Search for the reference in all three sections, Church Gen and RC, (unless you know which religion they were, ) which has the date you are looking for , then get that ref. film out and search through until you find all the details recorded for that burial. When you have the section and grave number you can follow the rest of the info in 'Cemetery Office'. I was told by someone  (Sept.2005) who rang for information that they now have a waiting list, but cannot be sure how accurate this information is.

My website has a number of very helpful links. Also dates and years of census. Opening and closing years of Cemeteries, Churchyards, Churches etc. Information on Gore's directory, and much more

STARTING YOUR RESEARCH

If you are just starting to research your family history please speak to your oldest living relatives and get as much information as you can from them. Take a note pad or voice recorder with you, and make sure that you go over your notes or recorded matter a few times so that you do not miss anything. Write down a 'blank' family tree to fill in, father mother, brothers sisters, then aunts uncles grandparents, and see what they remember. If you are the oldest living relative think hard and write down everything you remember, as you remember more details write them all down too, you can always go back to these notes.  See the BBC family history link click here LINKS

PUBLIC GRAVES

If your grave number has 'Public Grave' written by it , this means that the family , at that time, could not afford to purchase a private grave, so the person buried would be buried in a 'public' plot which other people of the same religious denomination were also buried. Their only connection would be that they died around the same time, and their families could not afford a private burial. Usually there is no headstone, as if a standing headstone is erected- you must name all people buried also buried in the same grave- However a small flat stone with inscription may be placed on the grave with your ancestors details. There are memorial masons who have carried this work for a number of people I have recommended.

CEMETERY OFFICE

Once a section and grave reference have been found in a particular Cemetery, family members can enquire of Liverpool Cemetery Office how many burials are in a family grave, as not all burials may be noted on a memorial.

You telephone 0151 233 3004 and give the following details

Anfield Cemetery (Or other Cemetery)

Section number and whether Church , Roman Catholic or General

Grave number

Name and date of death of one of those interred in the grave.

Email address

cemeteriesandcrematoria@liverpool.gov.uk

Or you can write to

Allerton Cemetery Lodge

192 Woolton Road

Liverpool L19 5NF

Giving all details outlined above.

They will ring /post back with burial order numbers, burial order numbers can be researched in Liverpool Records office and names ages addresses and sometimes occupations are found.

Remember that memorials often hold information which you may not find through normal research channels.

The cemetery office will also carry out burial searches, they charge £10 per year per name, but will be able to give cemetery, section and grave number.

CENSUS DATES - dates of when Census returns were taken.

LANCASHIRE MARRIAGE INDEX

http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/marriages.html

Click on the link o above, and if you are looking for specific details of two people, put their surnames in the boxes where indicated- Then click on the year you want to start your search, hold down the left mouse button and scroll down to the year you wish to stop searching- All the years will then be highlighted and click search and all those years will be searched. If e.g. you wanted to find all e.g. 'Barnesfather' marriages from 1837- 1900 , click on 1837, hold down your mouse and scroll down to whatever year you want to stop searching and then click search, copy and paste to your all (Control A) and then click copy will pick up all the marriages and references and you can then paste them to a blank Word , or notepad document to check through at your leisure. All church references can be searched in Liverpool Records office- this can save you quite a bit if money as A photocopy in the Records office is 30p and a copy from Liverpool Register Office is £7 plus postage. The numbers in the reference are first 4 numbers are the church reference number, then comes TP, Liv WD Toxteth Park, Liverpool, West Derby. The next number is the register number- so 6 would mean the 6th register- next number is the entry number- Very helpful when looking up marriages yourself.

LATTER DAY SAINTS

http://www.familysearch.org

One if the best sources for finding Church Records- I must have spent months/years of my life using their search facility- Very , very helpful. If you are a novice- put in your ancestors first and last names where shown, then put in a year of birth, if you are not sure put in an approximate year. There is a drop down box to allow you to go up to 20 years either way. Play around with the years, if you are not sure. If you are not a novice, please skip the bits you do not need.(and I apologies for repeating what you already know)

If you do find a baptism record for one of your ancestors in Liverpool I can carry out the look up in Liverpool Records and send you a photocopy of the entry. However if there is a Latter Day Saints family history centre near you , you can carry out the research yourself. You will need to get the details from the search and request LDS to order the microfilm for you. The cost is very reasonable and they are very helpful.

Also if you find one baptism that you are sure is your family, click on the Batch number and it will go straight to a search page, fill in the fathers name/ and the surname (you could even try the mothers name as well, but sometimes the mothers name was not given) and enter- and all baptisms with the same father's name in the same church will show up. This a a great way to find whole family baptism records. (As long as they did not travel from parish to Parish.)

Please note that Roman Catholic Churches and some other denominations are NOT collated in these records, so please don't think that if they are not there they cannot be found. It just takes a lot more searching.

LIVERPOOL RECORDS OFFICE

http://www.liverpool.gov.uk/Leisure_and_culture/Local_history_and_heritage/index.asp

All years of church records (opening/closing), census dates and years, and years of burial grounds opening/closing dates held in Liverpool Records office are all on my web site. http://liverpool-ancestors.co.uk

Research request can be made to Liverpool Records Office, they will carry out a small search for free , but then charge £16 per hour to carry out further research. (My charges for research are much lower) If you are going to Liverpool Records Office yourself, the following tips may help.

Don't just turn up, as most days all of the machines are pre-booked. So book first for each two hour reservation . Telephone 0151 233 5811. Opening hours have changed in the library, so time is now more limited than it was before.

You can also e mail a query and they will answer and may also carry out a small search for free.

Roman Catholic Marriages

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hibernia/mar/ind.htm

This link is very helpful if you are looking for Roman Catholic marriages.

Roman Catholics also married in Church of England Churches, as it was cheaper- as a registrar had to be paid as well as the church fees. Church of England marriages had their own registrars/vicars/curates. Most Roman Catholic Churches are NOT noted in Latter Day Saints records

Liverpool Family History Society

http://www.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/home.htm

Geat site with lots of information and links , you really should join, cost is very reasonable.

More tips an hints will be added soon,

Good luck with your searches

Sheila
